  Abstract Eleven papers, originating at a conference held at New York University in the spring of 1992, review the current state of knowledge of the convergence hypothesis, which asserts that groups of countries undergo a process that brings their levels of productivity and living standards increasingly close to one another. Papers focus on general patterns of convergence; technological leadership; what lies behind convergence; and the newly industrialized and less industrialized countries.
